Green light for class action lawsuit against Tiger Brands

The Johannesburg High Court has given the go-ahead for a class action against Tiger Brands in connection with the deadly listeriosis outbreak.

Richard Spoor Attorneys, which represented several firms, launched the application against Tiger Brands.
The company's Polokwane plant was identified as the source of the outbreak which led to the deaths of at least 189 people.
The class action suit covers over 1 000 people affected by the disease who intend to sue for constitutional damages.
Spoor says Tiger Brands decided not to oppose the certification application.
"Tiger Brands continues to deny any responsibility or liability for the outbreak, they didn't oppose the certification they have agreed to deal with this matter on a class action bases matter, but Tiger Brand is still free to say that they can't be held liable."
Spoor says the next step will be for the firm to issue summons early next year for them to give more details about where the company erred.
"Early next year we will issue a summons, where we will spell out in close detail what it is alleged Tiger has done wrong, they will have an opportunity to plead or respond to the summons."
