Growing calls for Ramaphosa to sack Gigaba

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Democratic Alliance (DA) and trade union federation Cosatu have all called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to axe Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba.

“Ramaphosa must do the honourable thing and fire him,” the EFF said following the public protector’s recommendation that Ramaphosa must discipline Gigaba for lying under oath.

Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane's found that Gigaba had violated the Constitution and the Ethics Code.

Her recommendations stem from the Fireblade Aviation court battle over the Oppenheimer family's private terminal at the OR Tambo International Airport.

Gigaba initially granted permission to the wealthy family but wanted to revoke his decision after he allegedly was pressured by the Gupta's who also wanted to run the terminal.

In 2017, North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria ruled that Gigaba lied under oath but also violated the Constitution.

“There is nothing and no worst crime for a public representative, above for all a minister, than lying and violating the Constitution,” said EFF spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi.

Ndlozi believes that Gigaba did not only disrespect South Africans but placed the country in a national security risk for allowing a wealthy family to run a business at a national key point.

“The reasons why Gigbaba was lying were unpatriotic.

“The pronouncement of the public protector in this case is worse than when Zuma had been found to have violated the Constitution."

Cosatu echoed the call by the EFF, describing Gigana as a liability and an embarrassment to both government and the ANC while the DA wants Ramaphosa to " finally put an end to Gigaba’s scandal-prone and frequently dishonest tenure".

Gigaba confirmed that he has received Mkhwebane’s report and is studying the recommendations.
