Heavy traffic expected as holidaymakers head to flood-ravaged KZN, Limpopo for Easter
The inclement weather in some parts of the country is not expected to derail holidaymakers from forging ahead with plans for the Easter break.
Traffic officials estimate heavy traffic in hotspot destinations including Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal.
While Limpopo has been spared, KZN is grappling with floods that have left widespread devastation.
This includes damage to infrastructure and a death toll topping 250.
Despite the ruins, Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Obed Sibasa says the N1 to Limpopo, N3 to KZN, N4 to Mpumalanga and N12 to Emalahleni will be under severe strain.
Traffic is expected to pick up from Thursday afternoon.
"We collectively urge vehicle drivers and other road users to adhere to the regulations of the road,” says the N3 Toll Route's operations manager Thania Dhoogra.
She says careful planning is needed by holidaymakers to navigate around the bad weather.
"Heavy rain, thunderstorms, fog and poor visibility may disrupt the flow of traffic along various parts of the N3 Toll Route during peak hours on Thursday and Friday. Poor weather, high traffic volumes, emergency situations and prevailing road conditions may adversely impact road safety and travel experiences. Therefore, it is incumbent on all road users to be prepared for any travel conditions, and to allow sufficient travel time to make provision for possible emergencies or delays.
Dhoogra adds emergency teams will be on high alert during the long weekend.
"Additional road safety and emergency resources will be deployed on the N3 Toll Route N3 Toll Concession, and its partners in law enforcement and emergency services, will deploy additional resources to support road users, and to encourage safety along the route."
