Residents of the province are picking up the pieces following the storms and floods that resulted in a loss of life and damage to property, infrastructure, and the environment.

At least 306 people have been confirmed dead.

The South African Weather Service has warned of more rainfall in the province over the weekend.

KZN provincial government spokesperson Lennox Mabaso says people are still welcome to visit the province over the Easter weekend.

“The province is welcoming with both hands all our visitors. Yes, we are going through this tragedy, but KZN is still a safe place to live, work and play. It is still South Africa’s place where people can find all the things that they intend to do, and we are here to make sure that people are safe and welcome during the tragic time.

“All is ready for the tourists, they will be able to enjoy our beaches and do all they want to do,” says Mabaso.

Mabaso says the provincial executive council is intensifying its response to the disaster.

“As of this morning, all MECs will visit various districts affected and lead profiling of all affected families, quantify the damage to each affected and ensure immediate interventions through disaster management officials.  The magnitude of the disaster is unprecedented and requires the provincial government, municipalities and social partners to be all hands on deck.

“The provincial government is also mobilising resources to speed up the recovery of missing people. Today Eskom and municipalities will give a report on efforts to restore water and electricity in all affected areas. The cabinet is aware that interventions are hampered to an extent by disrupted infrastructure networks but has directed that no effort must be spared in reaching the affected people.”
