Home Affairs, Miss SA organisers must clarify Adetshina eligibility

ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula has called on the organisers of the Miss South Africa pageant to clarify Chidimma Vanessa Onwe Adetshina’s eligibility to compete.

The 23-year-old law student, who has made it to the Top 11 for the 2024 pageant, has been the subject of intense debate on social media due to her nationality.
Adetshina was reportedly born in Soweto to a Nigerian father and a mother of Mozambican descent.
Many South Africans on social media have questioned her eligibility to contest Miss SA.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the NEC meeting in Boksburg on Thursday, Mbalula called on the Home Affairs Department to provide clarity.
"We must be guided by the law in relation to that. We must not have an unending debate around that particular issue," said Mbalula.
"You know the issue of foreigners in our country, what it has done because of the criminal behaviour of some foreigners in South Africa. It is a sensitive issue, and it must be clarified.
"It is very strange in this debate; the organisers of this are very quiet, and they have allowed this girl to get attacked out there.
"DA Minister Schreiber must clarify this issue so that we do not allow victimisation.”
Mbalula added that this matter has put the country's immigration laws in the spotlight.
