‘I was not sleeping on the job’ says Mbalula over Prasa power bill
Updated | By Neo Motloung
Transport Minister, Fikile Mbalula has dismissed reports that President Cyril Ramaphosa had to intervene to prevent Eskom from cutting the power supply to the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa).
This comes after claims that Prasa owed Eskom about R158 million.
“I was not sleeping on the job,” says Mbalula.
“We asked for (a) deviation from Treasury of R1 billion. We paid Eskom. It just took some time, because we moved money from capital expenditure to operations,” says Mbalula.
Prasa's Group Chief Executive Officer, Nkosinathi Sishi says Prasa and Eskom’s debt has been settled.
Sishi adds that when Prasa wants to pay an amount over a certain threshold, the Department of Transport has to be involved in the process.
“At the time, we could only pay R22 million and Eskom could not accept that,” explains Sishi.
Sishi insists that Prasa has now paid the full amount owed to Eskom.
