'If Gauteng sneezes, the rest of the country catches a cold' - Msimanga warns of Gauteng's dwindling progress

Democratic Alliance (DA) Gauteng caucus leader Solly Msimanga has warned Premier David Makhura against making empty promises to residents when he delivers the State of the Province Address on Tuesday.

Msimanga was speaking in Johannesburg where he delivered the alternative address.


Msimanga said Makhura must take the bull by the horns and deal decisively with future of e-tolls, as well as the electricity crisis.


He added the premier must be forthright with residents on the province's failures and progress.


"We cannot have a premier coming here to tell us of bullet trains, coming here and selling us dreams," said Msimanga.


"It is time to face the truth, that we are heading for a very desperate times."

The party's leadership met over the past two days at the DA's Nkululeko House headquarters in Johannesburg. Steenhuisen added that the party is satisfied with the selection of Randall Williams as the party's mayoral candidate for the capital city.

Msimanga warned Makhura that if he failed to get a handle of the problems faced by residents, there would trickle down effects for the rest of the country.


"If people in Gauteng are losing faith you can imagine what is happening in the rest of South Africa.


"If Gauteng sneeze, the rest of South Africa catches a flu. We cannot afford to have a sick South Africa therefore we cannot afford to have a sick Gauteng."


In previous years, Makhura's priorities included the economy, job creation and building social cohesion.
