IFP slams Cape Town fireworks ban as ‘infringement of rights’
Updated | By Sinethemba Madolo
The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) says the Democratic Alliance-led government in Cape Town has crossed the line by not permitting fireworks for Diwali, Guy Fawkes or New Year’s Eve.
The city announced last week that will not be allowing fireworks in designated areas this year.
The cost of the designated areas and reluctance from councillors to approve areas were listed as reasons for the move.
The ban comes shortly before Hindu followers mark the annual festival of lights later this month.

IFP chief whip Narend Singh says the ban is an infringement on rights.
"I'm surprise that the DA-led City of Cape Town allows the SANDF to go off Muizenburg for two days to let off cannons of all sort, equipment that created havoc in the area as far as animals are concerned and yet for a little thing like small sparklers and firework they come up with this kind of thinking that doesn't accommodate everybody.
"We do not support the letting of big bangs but in a controlled environment, we don’t see why the cultural and traditional rights of communities need to be hampered upon.”
