Mkhwebane has been under pressure since taking over from Thuli Masonsela, with a view in some quarters that she was chosen to protect President Jacob Zuma.

Mkhwebane says she is aware of the negativity towards her in the media, saying the distrust is something that concerns her.

The remarks around the negativity was in Mkhwebane's written speech, but she skipped over it in her actual address.

The Public Protector is embarking on a road show, where she will engage with South Africans on ways to make her office function more effectively.

The EFF has of late been her biggest critic, even going as far as demanding her removal.

"The issue of trust is perpetuated. I can say not everyone feels like that. I think it's on social media and the question is whether all South African are on social media. I'm not takin git lightly. I know the perception out there - that I am a spy and a puppet, but I'm here to say to South Africans that we are here to serve you and don't take into consideration whatever is being reported. I'm here to speak directly to you," says Mkhwebane.
