This follows media reports on Friday that the department does not have enough protective equipment and that some offices have seen a reduction in salaries.

Metro police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar says even though officers do have protective gear, the department is in the process of procuring even more.

"JMPD is currently procuring private protective equipment for all its police.

"Yesterday 2 500 masks got delivered at headquarters and another delivery of 7 000 masks will be delivered in the next few days and that includes gloves and sanitisers.”

Minnaar says the department’s headquarters has been tasked with the provision of protective gear.

"Those few officers who don't have masks or gloves or sanitisers must come to Martindale and they will be given masks."
