JMPD officers attacked and disarmed in Joburg CBD

Violent scenes erupted when a group attacked Johannesburg Metro Police officers in the streets of the Johannesburg inner city on Sunday afternoon
Social media reacted with shock on Sunday afternoon when video footage went viral, showing a crowd attacking Johannesburg Metro Police Department officers - and even disarming one in a CBD street.
That was after he fired warning shots into the air.
The angry mob can be seen not backing down, despite various JMPD cars on the scene.
Traffic cops in money video suspended
The street seems cordoned off and Johannesburg Metro Police can be seen retreating, as the angry mob hurls insults and move forward.
The officer in the front lines calls for back-up and armed colleagues arrive on the scene, flanked by additional JMPD vehicles.

JMPD's Wayne Minnaar says the officer was towing away a car belonging to a church member that was parked illegally.
"The officer was knocked unconscious despite shooting into the air to prevent the attack. Congregants of the church took away his firearm,but they did hand it over to the police" says Minnaar
The metro police department will be investigating the matter internally.
A member of the church who disarmed the metro police officer has been arrested.
