JMPD officers to ease traffic congestion as load shedding, rain take toll on motorists

Johannesburg metro police officers are set to be more visible at some intersections across the city as motorists face overwhelming traffic jams.

Vandalism of traffic lights, heavy rains and load shedding have all left motorists frustrated during peak periods in the morning and afternoon.
Metro police spokesperson Xolani Fihla says officers will be deployed to major routes between 06h00 - 09h00 in the morning and 15h00 - 18h00 in the afternoon.
"While officers cannot be at every corner and every intersection, the heavy congested and major routes will be prioritised.
"Officers have also been tasked to monitor areas and intersections outside the peak hours, as we've received numerous complaints regarding homeless people controlling traffic," says Fihla.
Fihla warns motorists against giving homeless people money as an incentive for traffic control.
"This encourages them to continue, and even go to the extent of tempering with traffic lights with the intention of making money. It further endangers the lives of the homeless individuals as they may be run over by vehicles."
