Joburg to deploy 500 metro cops during load shedding
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
Johannesburg metro police has come to the aid of frustrated motorists by deploying some 500 officers at various intersections during load shedding.
Motorists in the city have been stuck in heavier than usual traffic during peak times amid the constant rolling blackouts over the past two weeks.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla says some of the faulty traffic lights are due to vandalism.
"The acting chief of police has issued a directive that all officers must take up the point duty from six to nine in the morning and three to six in the afternoon. Officers have also been tasked to monitor areas and intersections where unauthorised people control traffic.
"We also discourage motorists from giving these people money as an incentive, as this encourages them to vandalise traffic lights.”
