The measures forms part of the city’s efforts to ensure compliance during the next 21 days, when South Africans are expected to stay at home as the country tries to reduce the rate of coronavirus infections.

Mayoral spokesperson Mlimandlela Ndamase says all essential services will continue to operate as normal over the next three weeks.

"All water and electricity cuts across the city, as part of our credit control measures, are immediately suspended. However, all customers, whose services have been disconnected in accordance with the credit management by-laws, must still make the necessary arrangements to ensure that water and electricity is restored. These are necessary services in the effort to combat the spread of COVID-19," says Ndamase.

Buses will also be made available to ferry essential services staff to and from work.
