Joburg taxi driver arrested for rape
Updated | By Lindiwe Mpanza
Gauteng police are urging commuters, and especially women, to be more vigilant when using public transport.
This follows the rape of a 23-year-old woman at the Bree taxi rank in the Johannesburg CBD on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson Xoli Mbele says a taxi driver attacked the woman after everyone left the taxi and she was alone.
"When they reached Bree taxi rank she asked to get off the taxi but the driver locked all the doors and sped off to a secluded place where he raped the woman."
The suspect was captured by CCTV cameras and was subsequently arrested by the metro police.
He is expected to appear at the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
Police are appealing to other victims to come forward as they suspect the man may have also raped other women.
