Jooste to expect a subpoena from Parliament
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
Former Chief Executive Officer of the embattled Steinhoff, Markus Jooste, has been summonsed to appear before Parliament.
The Speaker of the National Assembly, Baleka Mbete has authorised the Standing Committee on Finance (Scopa) to subpoena him, along with former CFO Ben la Grange.
Members of Parliament seek clarity in one of the biggest corporate scandals to hit South Africa.
However, it is not clear whether the duo will attend the sitting, scheduled for next week.
His lawyer had previously confirmed that Jooste would not attend the meeting, claiming a possibility exists that the probe by Parliament could prejudice the criminal and civil cases against him.
The country's elite crime fighting unit, the Hawks, said that no-one has been formally charged regarding the Steinhoff saga.
Hawks Head, Godfrey Lebeya told MPs last week that investigations are at "the initial stage" and no suspects have been formally identified, but he added "we have an idea who the possible suspects are".
Jooste's former friend, Cristo Wiese is also suing the embattled retailer for R59 billion.
Widescale fraud and accounting irregularities plummeted the company's shares with reports that the errors stretch back to 2016.
Although no criminal liability can be derived from Jooste's possible testimony when he appears - it can be used in establishing what transpired.
