Justice Edwin Cameron ‘a brave and bold man’

Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng described retired Justice Edwin Cameron as “a brave and bold man” for openly declaring his HIV status in a time when it was not popular.
Mogoeng paid tribute to Cameron, who is retiring as a Constitutional Court justice after 25 years of service.

“A brave and bold man, when HIV and Aids attracted stigma. He stood up and declared openly: ‘I am HIV positive’.”
A special ceremonial session at the apex court on Tuesday also saw National Assembly Speaker Thandi Modise and Justice Minister Ronald Lamola pay homage to the legal giant.

Quoting former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Modise said Cameron made an immense contribution to the country.
“Never was no much owed by so many, to so few. I make reference to this phrase because people like Justice Cameron is one of the few who have contributed so much to this our young constitutional democracy.”
