KZN not expected to be hard hit by Dineo
Updated | By Shaun Ryan & Anelisa Kubheka
Kwa-Zulu Natal will not be as hard hit by storm Dineo as initially expected, confirms the South African Weather Services.
They say the storm is now referred to as ex-Dineo, after it was downscaled to a tropical depression.
It made landfall in Mozambique overnight. It's reported to have killed four people - including a child.
Meteorologist Wisani Maluleke says there's significant cloud cover and rain in the extreme north of the province, including Pongola and Makhathini areas - but projections are now less severe.
Tropical Storm Dineo: KNP bracing for torrential rain
"We are still expecting a lot of rain in those areas. With a 60% chance of rain over northern parts of KZN.
"So we're still expecting a significant amount of rainfall, but not the rainfall that can scare people," he says.
Meanwhile, residents in Sodwana on the north coast say they've experienced sporadic rainfall - with the heaviest downpours early this morning.
Some people have strapped down solar panels in preparation for any gale force winds.
"There's been a lot of rain overnight - from 02:00 to 04:00. Last night rains got stronger and a lot more intense," a resident says.
