KZN police arrest woman for illegal possession of 5 rifles

Police in KwaZulu-Natal have arrested a 38-year-old woman after she was found in possession of five unlicensed rifles in the Kranskop area.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the woman was scheduled to appear in the Kranskop Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
"Today at 09:00, Brighton Beach Crime Intelligence, PSS K9 and Umhlali K9 Units conducted an intelligence driven operation at Kranskop area following up on an information about illegal firearms. The members identified a suspected house and it was searched. Five unlicensed firearms which were two 303 rifles, an AK47 rifle, a Mauser rifle and a shotgun were found inside the house.
"A woman who could not produce a license for the firearms was arrested and charged for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.The recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if they were used in any other crimes in the country."
KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni welcome the arrest and the recovery of unlicensed firearms which could have been used during faction fights and taxi-related conflicts in the province.
"We appeal to the community to continue working together with the police by providing valuable information about illegal firearms in the province," she said.
