Legal challenge to former Defense minister’s new gig as Speaker
Updated | By Eva Chipa
Law firm Mabuza Attorneys has released a statement,
addressed to the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Lechesa Tsenoli, on the election
of former Defense Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula as National Assembly
Speaker.
The law firm says they represent a growing number of individual citizens, led by Dr Onkgopotse Tabane and a non-governmental organization called the New Nation Movement NPC, and have been instructed to take all reasonable steps to prevent the election of Mapisa-Nqakula as Speaker.
Parliament will be voting on her potential appointment on Thursday.
Mabuza Attorneys said that if the ballot is held, it should be a secret ballot.
Failure to do so may result in the firm approaching the court on behalf of their clients.
However, Parliament says it is all systems go for the crucial special sitting of the National Assembly for the election of the new Speaker.
Acting Chief Justice Raymond Zondo has designated Judge President John Hlophe to preside over the sitting.
