Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has welcomed the arrest of a teacher from Umqhele Secondary School who allegedly raped a 16-year old Grade 10 pupil at the Ivory Park school last week.
A case was opened at a local police station a day later.
Police launched a manhunt for the 38-year-old man on the run.
He man handed himself over to police on Wednesday.
Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona confirmed disciplinary proceedings against the alleged rapist are already underway.
“The MEC has indicated that he is a firm opponent of any violence, particularly gender-based assaults on learners so we’re not going to tolerating such incidents in and around our schools,” said Mabona.
“The educator will also face a charge of absconding as he had left work without permission.
“We always had faith and trust in the police to ensure that the suspect ends up behind bars. We leave all the matters in the capable and trustworthy hands of our judicial system and trust that justice will prevail,” he added.
