Limpopo man arrested for killing, robbing own grandmother

Police in Limpopo have arrested a man for allegedly murdering his grandmother and stealing the SASSA grant money she had been saving.

The 23-year-old suspect was nabbed in Ga-Mothapo on Wednesday.


The 97-year-old was attacked and stabbed to death while sleeping in her home on Tuesday.


Police spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba says the suspect was arrested at the grandmother’s house


"The dedicated team of investigators, including the Crime Intelligence Unit, uncovered evidence which connected the grandson who was also staying with the deceased.


"Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect also robbed the deceased of  a large amount of cash which she has been saving from her monthly social grants."


"Police managed to recover some of the cash hidden in the suspect's bedroom and other exhibits, which included the knife which was found inside a pit toilet in the nearby tavern," he added.


The suspect will appear in the Mankweng Magistrate's Court on Thursday, facing charges of murder and house robbery.
