Limpopo police official caught transporting illegal cigarettes

Police in Polokwane have arrested a sergeant for being in possession of illegal cigarettes.

The 41-year-old sergeant, stationed at Beitbridge Border Post, was arrested on the N1 near Polokwane on Tuesday evening.


Police spokesperson Motlafela Mojapelo says police members were patrolling the highway near Tweefontein when they stopped a bakkie driven by the suspect.

He was wearing a police uniform.


"The vehicle was thoroughly searched and 20 boxes of illicit cigarettes with the estimated value of R350.000 were discovered inside the bakkie and confiscated," says Mojapelo.


The member was disarmed and arrested on the spot. The vehicle was also confiscated."


The suspect is expected to appear in the Polokwane Magistrates’ Court soon.


Meanwhile, police say investigations continue into more possible suspects.
