[LISTEN] Hawks shooting: No details on the stolen bag

Law enforcement authorities have not been able to provide clarity yet on the contents stolen out of the boot of the vehicle driven by a highly placed officer within the Hawks.

A member of the elite crime fighting unit was ambushed on the M1 in Johannesburg on Monday afternoon.


Five armed men shot and wounded the officer before stealing the bag and fleeing the scene.


"No, let's end right there," was the response by Hawks spokesperson, Ndivhuwo Mulamu on the question whether it could be documents relating to an ongoing investigation.


Mulamu confirmed that the officer is affiliated with the Hawks' Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations in Gauteng.

"At this moment, we cannot confirm the circumstances which led to the incident. A case of attempted murder has been opened and registered for investigations."


The officer was off-duty when the shooting took place.


A female occupant was also injured in the shooting.

An eyewitness described how he desperately wanted to be anywhere else as he saw the shooting unfold.


"I wanted myself out of that situation," he said.


Cases of attempted murder and robbery are investigated by the South African Police Service (SAPS).
