Leaked audio believed to contain the voice of ANC Treasurer General Paul Mashatile has the country abuzz.

"President Zuma basically said to us: 'I'm not going anywhere, I'm not convinced by you guys so I'm not going to resign. You can go back and report to your national working committee and the NEC that I said I'm not resigning'," Mashatile is heard saying in the recording.

Mashatile was recorded while addressing delegates at the Mining Indaba in Cape Town at the beginning of a week during which fast moving politics have left South Africa on tenter hooks.

At that stage, Mashatile was still under the impression that the special ANC NEC meeting would take place the next day, on Wednesday, and he elaborated on the party's plan to remove the President from his post.

He could not have known that an eleventh hour agreement between President Zuma and ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa would lead to the cancellation of the special ANC NEC meeting.
