EFF leader Julius Malema has revealed that former party chairperson Advocate Dali Mpofu previously suggested that the EFF merge with other progressive parties under the leadership of former president Jacob Zuma.

This proposal was made before the uMkhonto weSizwe Party was formed in December 2023.

Malema shared this while responding to Mpofu’s recent departure from the EFF to join the MK Party.

Mpofu announced his resignation during an interview with SABC News Political Editor Mzwandile Mbeje on Thursday morning.

He told Mbeje that he chaired meetings involving leaders from the UDM, PAC, ATM, and EFF, among others.

Speaking to EFF spokesperson Leigh-Ann Mathys on the EFF podcast, Malema confirmed the sequence of events.

"What I like about Dali is that there was a meeting of the opposition parties called by Zuma, and I said I am not going.

I sent Floyd Shivambu [former EFF deputy president] and EFF Secretary General Marshall Dlamini. Dali went to make a presentation...where he said the EFF must close down with other parties to form something under Zuma," said Malema.

Malema said Shivambu led the EFF delegation and was surprised by Mpofu’s proposal. "He came back extremely shocked that Dali is not only proposing it; he had taken the time to write it down," Malema added.

Following this meeting, Malema said he was presented with Mpofu’s proposal but firmly rejected it.

He expressed no animosity toward Mpofu’s decision to leave.

"He has been open about it. One day, when I write a book, I'll have a story to tell, even on how he became Zuma's lawyer," Malema said.

He added:  "This morning, when I woke up to the news, I was like, 'it is what it is.' We respect his decision, and there is nothing we can do about it."

The departure of Mpofu and other senior EFF leaders comes just ahead of the party’s upcoming elective conference in December, where its performance in the May elections will also be reviewed.

In a recent post on X, Malema said only two prominent leaders remain, though he suggested their commitment to the EFF may have waned.

Despite these changes, he reaffirmed his confidence that the EFF will continue to grow and evolve.
