Madiba inspires crocheting record attempt
Updated | By Sinethemba Madolo
KnitWits will be attempting to
break a Guinness world record by crocheting a 27 kilometre long scarf as part
of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day.
The new attempt comes after 67 Blankets broke a record for the largest portrait blanket in the world with a picture of the late president Nelson Mandela.
67 Blankets founder, Carolyn Steyn, says the entire blanket measured over 8000 square meters, which is bigger than a rugby field.
Steyn says the new event, known as 27kmScarf, will kick off the 29th July at the Nelson Mandela capture site in Howick.
"Why 27 kilometres? Because Madiba spent 27 years behind bars.
"27 kilometres is an extremely long scarf and we need as many hands on deck as possible.
"Each scarf must be 20cm by 150 to 200cm. It also needs to be crocheted rather than knitted and the hook size must be no bigger than 6.5mm," Steyn explains.
