Maimane predicts disastrous SONAs

DA leader Mmusi Maimane believes the next two State of the Nation Addresses (SONA) will be a nightmare.

President Jacob Zuma is set to deliver two more before a new head of state takes over.

This year's address by President Zuma descended into chaos, when EFF MPs were violently removed after delaying proceedings by more than an hour.

Maimane also believes Parliament has never been more removed from the man on the street.

He says the blame for this cannot be laid at President Zuma's door alone, but that the ANC needs to take collective responsibility.

"The ANC, as a collective, are not constitutionalists - all of them. When they voted in defence of Zuma, it became quite clear that they no longer had a deep understanding of constitutionalism," says Maimane.

This was the first State of the Nation Address since the ANC lost control of Tshwane, Johannesburg and Nelson Mandela Bay.

Maimane say now, more than ever, opposition parties need to work together.

"We may differ ideologically in certain instances, but what we agree upon is that the ANC is not good for South Africa," says Maimane.
