Maimane says DA election ad shows party ‘has issue with new South Africa’

Build One South Africa leader Mmusi Maimane on Wednesday became the latest politician to express dismay at the DA’s latest election advert.
The advert has seen the DA come under fire from some quarters, with President Cyril Ramaphosa also joining the chorus of disapproval on Tuesday.
The short advert shows an image of the South African flag going up in flames.
Addressing the media at the launch of the ad on Sunday evening, DA leader John Steenhuisen said the party wanted to convey an urgent warning on the perils faced by the country ahead of the May 29 election.
Maimane, who is a former leader of the DA, said the party’s actions only serve to undermine the new democratic South Africa.
"The DA would have never, in the midst of the apartheid government, shot an advert where they were burning the apartheid flag. So clearly, their first issue is with the new South Africa.
"At the end of the day, regardless of the electoral outcomes, we remain South Africans, and South Africa must remain above any organisation," he said.
