Makhura launched his administration's mid-term performance review, with the report detailing the provincial government's performance since it assumed office in 2014.

The scourge of gender-based violence has hit the headlines again over the past few weeks, following the brutal killings of several women.

Makhura says he has told police that instances of crime needs to be reduced by 50 percent.

"We need national government's support from the point of view of resources, police vehicles and crime fighting teams, including specialised units. That is what we want to deal with the problem, including the problems of drugs, safety of women, femicide and all murder and robberies," says Makhura.

Makhura made a commitment to run a clean and accountable administration over the next two years.

"I'm going to sign delivery agreements with every MEC. After that the MECs will sign a performance agreement with clear targets to deliver by end of term 2019. There are very clear numbers and deliverables in there. We will release these performance and delivery agreements to the public. That is the new approach."
