Makhura briefed the media Thursday morning, following the Local Government Elections which produced 11 hung councils in the province.

The premier has called on political parties to put the interest of the people first and said he is looking forward overseeing municipalities governed by coalition.

He believes political parties will have to make it work, as residents will continue to need services from government.

Makhura said even if the coalitions end up collapsing, residents having nothing to fear.

"In KwaZulu Natal and the Western Cape there is a wealth of experience about what we are dealing with now. You may ask the Premier of Gauteng may not have dealt with this, but I know the provincial governments of KwaZulu Natal and the Western Cape have it, to deal with these coalition governments, municipalities that are run by coalitions and unable to pass budgets," he said.

Makhura said Gauteng can learn from lessons on how coalitions can impact on governance and service delivery.

"It's not a new situation in our country. In South Africa's economic hub it may be a news environment, but I can ensure you we will soon know how to manage it."
