Drivers for e-hailing services like Uber and Bolt are embarking on a three-day nationwide protest from Tuesday to highlight safety concerns and call for the sector to be regulated.

The MEC met with the organisation Unity in Diversity on Monday as part of the mediation process.

Mamabolo says parties agreed that, while the protest will go ahead, there is no room for violence.

“The MEC emphasised the importance of mediation and negotiation and assured the parties that mediation will be concluded in the next three months. UID undertook to engage with its members with a view to obtaining a mandate on the continued participation of the members in the mediation process,” the parties said in a joint statement.

“The parties are unanimous that the meeting was constructive and conducted in a collaborative manner.”

The protest will start in Pretoria on Tuesday where drivers will hand over a memorandum at the Department of Trade and Industry and the Union Buildings.

On Wednesday, the demonstration will head Mamabolo’s office.

The final day of the strike action will be on Thursday and all e-hailing services will be shut down to “prevent the companies from generating any income”
