Mamelodi flood victims' relocation underway
Updated | By Masechaba Sefularo
Mamelodi residents affected by the floods have been living in the Nellmapius Community Hall since the disaster in February 2022.
The City of Tshwane Human Settlements MMC Ofentse Madzebatela announced on Thursday that beneficiaries of the relocation include residents from neighbouring areas who are living on uninhabitable land.
"In total, more than 500 households will be relocated to Leeuwfontein Ext 27. This township is developable, near major roads, with future plans to establish a formal township," he said.
The 500 households include the flood victims and beneficiaries from Seven Seven, Eerste Fabrieke, Phomolong, Mamelodi Phase 1 and Mamelodi Ext 17.
Residents from these areas were previously warned that they had erected their dwellings along flood lines, wetlands, municipal servitudes and a public hall - with the city saying that this made their neighbourhoods impossible to develop.
"The city has always taken the plight of the flood victims seriously and worked tirelessly to identify suitable land for the victims. We remain committed to improving the lives of residents and building a working capital city for all," added Madzebatela.
The relocation is expected to be completed by the end of next month.
