Man accused of Normandien couple’s murder abandons bail

The 29-year-old man accused of the double-murder of a KwaZulu-Natal couple abandoned his bail application at the Estcourt Magistrates Court on Monday.

Glenn and Vida Raffertys, both in their 60s, were ambushed, robbed and killed on their farm last month. 


Siyabonga Macu is charged with the murder of the couple. 


Macu was arrested in Osizweni just over a week ago. 


Spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in KwaZulu-Natal Natasha Kara says the accused will remain behind bars until next the matter is heard next month.   


“The matter was postponed to today for a formal bail application however today the court was advised by the legal representative for the accused that the accused was abandoning his bail application.”


The case was adjourned until 29 October for further investigation. 


Earlier this month, Police Minister Bheki Cele visited the community and vowed to address the shortage in staff at the local police station.
