Mashaba told the media the city has information - leading them to conclude that the invasions are politically motivated and orchestrated by the ANC.

The new DA led administration took over the City from the ANC about two weeks ago.

The city is appealing to residents to respect the rule of law.

There have been attempted land invasions in Orange Farm, Tshepisong, Lenasia South and Marlboro.

The mayor, however, hit back on Friday - accusing the ANC of being hell bent on destabilising the new rule of law in the city at all cost.

The ANC released a statement, saying it has noted 'the opportunistic and rather unfortunate stance' taken by the DA in both Tshwane and Johannesburg.

"Any person irrespective of their political affiliation who mobilises the community to illegally occupy land and/or vandalise property should face the full might of the law and should be harshly dealt with. Land invasions remained a challenge even when the ANC was governing in the two cities. We therefore dismiss the allegations by the DA with the contempt they deserve," the ANC said.

Mashaba said the city won't be deterred.

He says at the top of their list is the completion of an official, credible housing list that he will sign off.

"It is acknowledged that there are people who have been on the city housing waiting list since 1996/1997 and still do not have access to proper housing. We also remain committed to completing a credible and transparent housing waiting list, which I will sign off within 90 days," Mashaba said.

The City has 181 informal settlements with an estimated housing backlog of 300 000.

Mashaba says it is difficult to say when they hope to deliver homes.

"We will not lie to our residents. There is a big backlog that is going to take a lot of hard work by the city to start making a dent in this inherited challenges that we are all aware of."
