Mashaba wants judicial inquiry into Gauteng, KwaZulu unrest
ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to launch a judicial commission of inquiry into the recent acts of violence and looting.
Nearly 400 people died during the unrest in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal – with Ramaphosa describing the violence in the two provinces as an insurrection.
During an ActionSA briefing on Tuesday, Mashaba said they are giving Ramaphosa 60 days to announce the appointment of judge to head the inquiry.
"Such an inquiry, led by a judge, is the only way of ensuring that those who are responsible for the death and the destruction visited upon the residents of KZN and Gauteng are held to account, regardless of who they are or the position they hold within the ANC.
"In the likelihood that President Ramaphosa doesn't take these steps within 60 days, ActionSA will be laying a complaint before the office of the Public Protector to ensure that he is compelled to do so as his predecessor before him."
Mashaba says the inquiry must unmask the masterminds behind the unrest.
"The inquiry must seek to establish the identity of ring-leaders from the ANC and wherever else they may come from who is responsible for the coordinated attacks on communities, establish the culpability of senior ANC members and politicians in inciting acts of violence and destruction."
