Maties to explore mandatory vaccination rule
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
The Stellenbosch University council has tasked its management to work towards a rule on vaccinating students and staff against Covid-19 for 2022.
Rector and vice-chancellor Wim de Villiers says the University is exploring the possibility of mandatory vaccines.
“A vaccine rule will determine the extent to which staff and students can work and study at the University depending on their vaccination status. It will describe the expectation, as well as the criteria for exceptions.

“Vaccines are safe, and they save lives. Our message is that getting vaccinated is the responsible thing to do. So, we have been urging everyone to get the vaccine,” he said.
De Villiers says the decision is expected to be taken as soon as possible “because it is a matter of life and death.”
The UCT senate will this week vote on a motion of whether to make vaccination mandatory at the institution or not.
