"The title deeds handover is part of the City’s service delivery drive which its nature is to restore dignity amongst Johannesburg’s disadvantaged residents," Tau said. "Today marked the continuation of the title deeds handover as already begun in townships across the City."

The handover occurred after a lengthy ownership verification process of the properties that the beneficiaries, aged between 40 and 82, occupy.

The title deeds were handed over in South Hills, Bella Vista, Doornfontein and Turffontein in the south of the metropolitan municipality, as well as at Lehae.

The City added that as part of his community engagement programme, Tau also unveiled the R360 million Kazarne Intermodal Transport Facility development site at the Queen Elizabeth Bridge Park.

"The facility, which is aimed at easing pressure on inner city facilities that accommodate 4,000 taxis at rank centres but leave out an additional 1,800 competing for space on the City’s streets and causing traffic congestion, will be completed by February 2018."

Tau also went to assess the progress at the Johannesburg Social Housing Company (JOSHCO) projects in Turffontein and South Hills.
