Mbalula vows to drive away Gauteng drivers’ licence frustrations

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula is confident that his department will soon be able to start easing the backlog in the renewal of drivers’ licences in Gauteng.
Mbalula paid an unannounced visit to the Themba DLTC in Hammanskraal on Thursday amid complaints over the system, which is buckling under the strain of a massive backlog.
From next week, extended operating hours will be implemented at driving license centres across the province.
“Two satellite centres will be opened and at the RTMC offices in Centurion and Midrand. A task team has been established to advise the Gauteng Department of Transport on the procurement of mobile centres,” Mbalula said.
“Extended operational hours will be introduced and all centres will open from Monday to Sunday with effect from next week. I will be back also to monitor that and indeed the opening of these centres in Gauteng, together with the MECs, are open from Monday to Sunday in terms of the hours we actually allocated.
“All DLTCs falling under the Tshwane Metro will open for operation from 6 am starting from December. Operation centres will be opened daily to monitor operations at DLTCs and evaluate the availability of booking slots will start on Monday next week.”
More slots will also be made available for the renewal of drivers’ licences.
“Seventy percent of human resource capacity and equipment at DLTCs will be dedicated to the renewal of drivers’ license cards. Seventy percent of slots on the online booking system will be dedicated to the expired driving license cards,” he said.
