Mcebisi Jonas calls for referendum on electoral system
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
Former finance minister Mcebisi Jonas has called for a referendum to decide on the shape of the country's electoral system.
"My proposal is that one of the things we should consider as aprt of the resolutions out of this conference is to call for a national referendum on the electoral system to define the way forward.
"This should be preceded by a mass education and mobilisation campaign focusing on the importance of electroal reform to turn the electoral system on its head and liberate the country from the clutches of party barrons."

The country's electoral system has again taken centre stage over the past few weeks.
Recommendations contained in the state capture report, that was released by Chief Justice Raymond Zondo last week, are that the constitution should be changed to allow for a president to be directly elected.
Zondo found that the electoral system to be flawed because many may have wished to vote for the ANC but did not want Jacob Zuma as president.
