The 20-year-old was killed when armed suspects fired random shots during a business robbery in Lyndenburg in the early hours of Saturday, 21 October.

The group of about 10 assailants, driving a white Isuzu bakkie, began their crime spree just after midnight when they targeted a filling station.

“According to further details, the suspects were seen carrying pistols as well as rifles, and they reportedly held the staff at gunpoint. It is also alleged that the suspects detonated some explosives to gain access to the drop safe and then took an undisclosed amount of cash as well as some cigarettes,” said provincial police spokesperson Donald Mdhluli.

Griesel was killed when the criminals ransacked and robbed another filling station, where they stole an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes, before targeting a liquor store in the same vicinity.

There, Mdludli says, the suspects helped themselves to various items, including expensive “beverages” and cigarettes.

“During this horrific event, a report shows that the suspects were shooting randomly at the scene and also firing some shots towards any motor vehicle that was approaching the crime scene. Unfortunately, as a result, a Ms Megan Griesel, who was reportedly travelling alone in a vehicle, was fatally shot inside the car, which was found riddled with bullets,” he added.

Police made a breakthrough last week after receiving tip-offs that led them to Masoyi, outside White River, where the first suspect was nabbed.

“The suspect made a brief appearance at the Lydenburg Magistrate's Court on Friday, 3 November, where the matter was postponed to Tuesday, 7 November 2023, whilst the suspect remained in custody. More charges could possibly be added against the suspect as the investigation continues.”

Further information led to the arrest of a second suspect, who was found to be in possession of a firearm and ammunition, in Kanyamazane on 2 November.

He appeared in the Kabokweni Magistrate's Court on Friday (3 November), facing a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm with ammunition.

Mdhuli says the identities of the suspects have been withheld to avoid jeopardising the investigation.
