Midday Edition: State keeps fighting Bashir battle

OMAR AL-BASHIR DEBACLE - The next chapter in the Omar al-Bashir debacle played itself out in the High Court in Pretoria this morning, where the court has reserved judgement in the application by the State for leave to appeal the ruling of June. 

 

Government was then instructed by the court to prevent the Sudanese President from leaving South Africa, while he was here for the African Union Summit. 


However, he flew out of the country, with a full bench of the court led by Gauteng Judge President Dunstan Mlambo accusing government of ignoring the court ruling. 


Government now wants that ruling to be heard on appeal. Sibahle Motha reports...


 


GOVERNMENT TACKLES ECONOMY - The state of the South African economy is challenging government as it tries to find ways to return stability. 


This week alone, we've seen President Jacob Zuma addressing the country on two separate occasions, and this morning Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa arrived at the Johannesburg offices of the National Economic Development and Labour Council, for discussions over a national minimum wage and the right to strike.

NETBALL WORLD CUP - The Spar Proteas were denied a place in the semi-finals of the Netball World Cup in Sydney when they were, this morning, beaten 62-46 by England. 


As Michael Vlismas reports, the experience of the English gave them the edge...

DE VILLIERS CRITICISES MEYER - After a stormy week about transformation in rugby and concern over the performance of the Springbok team, former national coach Peter de Villiers didn't mince his words about current coach Heyneke Meyer.
