Minor in court for Lufuno Mavhungu assault

A 14-year-old girl arrested in connection with the assault of Lufuno Mavhunga is expected back in court in the Thohoyandou Children’s Court for a formal bail application.

The incident, which was captured on video and went viral on social media, took place at Sibasa Mbilwi Secondary School.
Mavhunga later committed suicide.
The teen, who has since been arrested, is facing a charge of assault.
The teenager made her first court appearance last week.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi says child in conflict with the law will be dealt with according to the Child Justice Act prescripts.
“The preliminary inquiry was completed last week. She will appear today in Thohoyandou Magistrate Children's Court.
“The child in conflict of the law assaulted another learner who later committed suicide, this matter will be dealt with according to the Child Justice Act prescripts.
“The proceedings will be held behind closed doors as the accused is a minor,” says Malabi-Dzhangi.
