The party said the decision was part of efforts to “cleanse itself” of “rogue elements” within its ranks, and address alleged external forces working to destabilise.

Among them is Jabulani Khumalo, whom former president Jacob Zuma asked to register the party on his behalf.

The others are Ray Khumalo, Bheki Manzini, Lebo Moepeng, and Rochelle Davidson, also known as Gogo Mahlalaentabeni.

In a statement released on Friday evening, the MK party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela said: “We want to categorically state that the National Leadership Core will always act and make decisions in the interest of patriotic South Africans that want to see change.”

The latest leadership changes follow the redeployment of four members, including youth leader Bonginkosi Khanyile.

The party has urged its members to remain disciplined and trust the leadership as it works to grow its support base.

The expulsions were announced on the back of the Electoral Court’s publication of the reasons for its earlier decision that cleared the way for MK Party leader, and former president of the Republic, Jacob Zuma to contest in the upcoming general elections.

The Electoral Commission had earlier found that Zuma could not stand for the elections due to his contempt of court conviction that saw him sentenced to 15 months imprisonment.

The IEC has turned to the Constitutional Court to appeal the electoral court’s decision to overturn its rejection of Zuma’s candidacy.
