This follows several reports on Tuesday evening claiming Moerane has passed away.

The former Joburg mayor is in a critical condition in Milpark Hospital after he was involved in a car crash earlier this month.

Speaking outside the hospital on Wednesday morning, family spokesperson Mike Maile blamed the media and the hospital for spreading “fake news about his death”.

Maile says Moerane’s condition remains critical but stable.

"There has been unprofessionalism on the part of hospital staff because they are the source of the rumour. All I can say I that Moerane is not conscious, and the rumours are not making things easier for them. One minute the doctors say one thing and the next minute they say something different. There was no 48-hour [period] given to the family.

"He is still critical, there hasn't been much change and doctors say they are trying their best and there is no improvement."
