Gauteng police have recovered more than 300 unlicensed firearms and more than 4400 rounds of live ammunition during the past two weeks.
It says the seizures are part if an intensified fight against contact crimes in the province.
"The recovery of these weapons came at a time when police have intensified the fight against contact crimes which include murder and armed robbery,” says police spokesperson Mavela Masondo.
"More police officers have been deployed on the ground to conduct crime prevention patrols, stop-and-searches as well as roadblocks.”
Among those arrested are suspects believed to be involved in gangsterism and ATM bombings.
"Police in Eldorado Park were patrolling along the hotspot area when they searched a man who was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm loaded with eight rounds of ammunition. The 32-year-old suspect, a resident of Westbury, is allegedly wanted for murder cases in Sophiatown.
"All the recovered firearms will be subjected to a ballistic test to determine whether they can be linked to other serious crimes committed,” Masondo adds.
