The Department of Health says 509 babies were born in South Africa on New Year's Day across the country.

National health department spokesperson, Foster Mohale said the number of babies consists of 250 girls and 259 boys recorded between midnight and midday on the first day of 2023.
“Amongst the happy parents who welcomed their bundles of joy include a 15-year KwaZulu-Natal teenage mother who welcomed her healthy baby at Port Shepstone hospital,” he noted.
“The Department will, in collaboration with various stakeholders including youth organisations, intensify the Sexual Reproductive Health Awareness Campaign as part of efforts to improve access to family planning services to address the scourge of preventable teenage pregnancies in South Africa through collective identification of gaps in the current responses for young people’s challenges and strategies to improve interventions.”
The final statistics on the New Year`s babies will publish during the course of the week.
