According to the RTMC more than 5 500 motorists have been reported so far for drunken driving, speeding, reckless and negligent driving, among others.

"The highest number of motorists - 3700 - were arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol," the RTMC said.

Meanwhile traffic started increasing drastically as holidaymakers make their way to their Christmas destination.

The roads are expected to remain busy the whole day and the RTMC has urged pedestrians to refrain from crossing busy roads.
