More visible policing on Joburg roads

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) will be out in full force on the city’s roads, with more officers being deployed to pull over speeding motorists.

There are currently no speed cameras in operation in Johannesburg, after the DA-led administration ended non-compliant contracts with five service providers.

But the JMPD's Wayne Minnaar says does not mean that motorists will be allowed to disregard the rules of the road.

“The city took the decision to have more visible policing and officers on the side of the road as opposed to having cameras and sending fines via the post. Speed law enforcement is not about making money, it’s about improving safety on the roads.

“Officers are now doing manual speed law enforcement. They will stop cars on the side of the road and write handwritten fines. More officers are now visible as to having them behind bushes with speed cameras,” says Minnaar.
