He was born as Dante Terrell Smith.

The Director-General of Home Affairs, Mkuseli Apleni, says this will bring an end to the saga after Mos Def was arrested in Cape Town when he tried to leave the country with his family in January.

Mos Def faced charges for contravening the Immigration Act.

"Mr Smith-Bey has unreservedly apologised to the government of South Africa, and more particularly to the Department of Home Affairs for his actions and for any inconvenience of prejudice this may have caused," says Apleni.

Bey tried to leave South Africa on a World Government of World Citizens passport, which South Africa does not recognise.

"He will depart on 22 November 2016 using a valid passport from the US. The department will withdraw the charges against him on Friday in his absence," says Apleni.
